Spirit Mountain Casino in Grande Ronde, Oregon has a regular $30-60 hold’em game held every Monday that I have been trying to play as often as possible. During my recent visit, a hand came up that I want to share. The reason I wanted to write an article about the hand is because it brings up a seriously difficult subject in limit hold’em: bluffing. In a $1-2 NL cash game, I raised with AA to $9 after four limpers. With two callers the pot was $34. The flop came down QQ3 rainbow, and everyone checked to me. What should I do? If you said to bet something, you’re WRONG! (more…)
This week in La Center, Washington, Jason won the $210 tournament with Billy taking 3rd. Jason took home $3,145 and Billy $1,190. It was a good opportunity to get them both on the poster, so they convinced Ben, the tournament director, to get them on there! This is my first article in quite a while, and for that I must apologize. I have had what you might call a poker player’s writer’s block, along with the fact that I have been traveling pretty heavily for the past few months with Final Table Team. During these travels I have come to the (initially disappointing) realization that I might just be meant to play cash games. I am going to be utterly personal with this article to try to illustrate my point, both about myself and my good friends of Final Table Team. In fact, while reading this, it may seem more like a journal entry than an article, but I’m just hoping to help a few people out there learn from my mistakes. My thesis, if you will, is that if you have found a poker game that works for you consistently, time and time again, you should have an overwhelming reason (* cough * bankroll) to move on to something else.
